Kidney Dialysis for Oban

GIVE US OUR LIVES BACK

Oban does not have a kidney dialysis machine.

This means that the people in Oban who require dialysis have to travel long distances 3 times a week, 52 weeks a year, for treatment, just to keep them alive. We are campaigning for the NHS to provide a dialysis unit in the Lorn and Islands Hospital. We firmly believe that a town the size of Oban desperately needs this, as soon as possible.

The Caring side of the NHS

The NHS is now sending patients from Mull down to Campbletown to Dialysis. This entails catching the first ferry from Craignure at 07.10hrs - being collected from Oban Ferry Terminal by private taxi travel to Campbletown which is taking anything between 2.5 - 3 hours each way- dialysising for 4.5 hrs - travel back to Oban by same taxi - catching the ferry back to Mull, sometimes getting back into their house after 21.00hrs - a total of 14 hours. This happens 3 days a week every week.

Perhaps whoever is in control of patient care at the NHS would like to try this routine for a month, or even just a week, and report back with their thoughts.

This is completley unnaceptable - we require a unit in Oban NOW as patients requiring dialysis will increase and currently all units are working to capacity.
